GAEL HORELLOU IDENTITE (REUNION ISLAND)

Biography

Colorful jazz married with the rhythmic timbres of the Indian Ocean, Maloya from Reunion
Island tinged with the harmonies of American jazz, Identité’s music navigates the world of
these two “black musics”.

“An identity to be found somewhere between a creole cabin roof and the red bricks of
Brooklyn.”

In 2011, Gael Horellou discovered Reunion and fell in love with the island and its culture.
“Identité” is a musical fusion project melting together basic jazz and Indian Ocean rhythms.
To do this, saxophonist and composer Gael Horellou has gathered around him organist
Florent Gac, guitarist Nicolas Beaulieu and a section of traditional drums composed of
Emmanuel Félicité, Vincent Philéas and Jérôme Calciné.

The Band has been performing since 2014 at the main venues in Reunion Island: the Luc
Donat Theatre, Kabardock (opening for Trilok Gurtu), Palaxa, Le Séchoir and others, and puts
on educational concerts for schools about jazz and maloya.

First album will be released on the French label Breakz (Idol/Socadisc) music in March
2017.

‘With Identité, the saxophonist Gael Horellou gives a new shot of
life to maloya-jazz fusions.’
